News from the Petitcodiac & Area Garden Club November 2022

Village of Petitcodiac, New Brunswick Achieves 4 Blooms Thanks to the School Student Garden
The Village of Petitcodiac recieved a rating of 4 Blooms and a special mention for The School Student Garden during the 2022 National/International Symposium and Awards Ceremonies in Victoria, British Colombia. The Village of Petitcodiac participated in the Up to 6, 000 Population category along with Chipman NB; Melford SK and St. Paul AB. The community also recieved an Outstanding Achievement Award for the Scotts Youth Involvement Award. Over the summer, trained volunteer judges travelled to participating communities to evaluate the overall contributions of municipal council and departments; industry; businesses and the private sector - including volunteer efforts - regarding the following criteria: Community Apperance, Envirtonemental Action, Heritage Conservation, Tree Management, Landscape and Plant & Floral Displays. Following their evaluation, volunteer judges Colleen Stockford and Lucy Chang wrote: "Petitcodiac has a new school garden! The students participate hands-on for every aspect of the project - from seeding in the on-site greenhouse to transplanting out the mature seedlings. Once the beds are fully planted, excess seedings are made available for sale to the community. This spring, proceeds from the sale were used to purchase benches for the the garden so that people could come, sit, relax and take advantage of the therapeutic ambience the garden exudes. This fall, the students will learn how to can the garden produce and donate a portion of that to those in need. The students are very proud of their accomplishments and are looking forward to participating in this outdoor garden for years to come!" All those involved in the Communities in Bloom program can be proud of their efforts, benefitting all of society by providing real and meaningful ways to mitigate climate change.
